Why Florida's 47 First-Place Votes Produce a 50-Point Lead

Florida received 47 of the 59 first-place votes in the October 19 AP men's basketball preseason poll, but its lead over Duke is 50 points. Duke kept its total close by appearing second on 39 ballots and staying in every voter's top five.

The first-place tally gives Florida 79.7% of the panel's top choices. Duke received 10, and Illinois received the remaining two. The published ranking puts Florida at 1,461 points, Duke at 1,411 and Illinois at 1,342.

AP's scoring gives a team 25 points for first place, 24 for second and one fewer for each position down to 25th. A voter who places Florida first and Duke second contributes only one point to Florida's lead. First-place votes count the top choices; the point total also includes each team's position on the rest of the ballot.

Duke's Second Places Preserve Its Total

Florida's distribution is concentrated at the top: 47 firsts, 10 seconds and two thirds. Its 59 placements are worth 1,461 of a possible 1,475 points. The 10 second-place votes cost one point apiece relative to first; the two thirds cost two apiece. Florida falls just 14 points short of a unanimous No. 1 total.

Duke's 10 firsts are joined by 39 seconds, seven thirds, one fourth and two fifths. Those placements leave Duke 64 points below the same maximum. The difference between the teams' shortfalls, 64 minus 14, is the entire 50-point lead.

Comparing the two teams directly, Florida is higher on 48 ballots and Duke on 11. The ranking gaps favoring Florida add up to 62 places, while those favoring Duke add up to 12. Because each position is worth one AP point, that difference also produces 50.

Duke's frequent second places explain why Florida can command a large majority of first choices without opening a much larger scoring gap. The panel's strongest agreement puts Florida at the top or very close to it, while Duke's consistently high placements preserve most of the points available below first.
