Kentucky Reaches the Top 10 With 63 of 70 Voters Behind It

The 7–1 Wildcats enter their bye with their best SEC start since 1977 and broad ballot support for their new No. 9 ranking.

Kentucky completed an unbeaten October with a 34–17 win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, then entered the top 10 in Sunday's AP poll. The Wildcats' sixth consecutive victory left them 7–1 overall and 5–1 in the SEC.

Their No. 9 ranking has wide support: 63 of the 70 voters placed Kentucky in the top 10, up from six a week earlier. That is 90% of the panel, a sharp change for a team that was outside the Top 25 three weeks ago.

From Outside the Poll to No. 9

On October 4, Kentucky appeared on 38 ballots and missed the Top 25. It returned at No. 15 on October 11, climbed to No. 12 on October 18 and now sits ninth. The same 70 voters submitted all four editions, so that progression reflects changing placements within a fixed panel.

Acceptance came in stages. Two voters had Kentucky in the top 10 on October 11. A week later, everyone included the Wildcats somewhere in the Top 25, but only six put them in the first ten. This week's move changes where most voters place Kentucky within the national order.

Sixty-eight voters raised the Wildcats from last week, one lowered them and one kept them unchanged. All six previous top-10 voters retained Kentucky there, while 57 others moved it into that group.

The agreement still has limits. Forty-three voters put Kentucky ninth or tenth, and only one placed it in the top five. Seven kept it outside the top 10, with the lowest vote at No. 16. The ballots show broad agreement about top-10 membership alongside differences over how high the Wildcats belong.

A Break After Four October Wins

Kentucky's October included consecutive 35–34 overtime victories over South Carolina and LSU, a 21–13 win at Oklahoma and Saturday's victory over Vanderbilt. According to the school's postgame notes, its 5–1 SEC record is its best league start since 1977.

Vanderbilt made the Wildcats work for the latest win. Kentucky trailed 10–0 early in the second quarter before taking a 14–10 halftime lead, the school's recap reported. The final margin was 17 points, but the unbeaten month required two overtime wins and that recovery against the Commodores.

Kentucky also advanced as Ole Miss and Texas Tech fell out of the top 10. Rankings compare teams with one another; the ballots cannot separate the effect of the Vanderbilt win from the space created above Kentucky. What they establish is that the resulting top-10 placement extends across most of the panel.

The Wildcats have an open date October 31 before visiting Tennessee November 7, followed by Florida, Missouri and Louisville. Kentucky enters that stretch with broad agreement about its current standing. Sustaining it through three more SEC games is a more demanding November question than whether the Wildcats belong on the ballot at all.

Sources & Methodology

Ballot figures were independently recomputed from the complete October 4, 11, 18 and 25 AP football editions, each containing the same 70 voters. Top-10 support counts actual placements from No. 1 through No. 10; an omission remains unranked. The 68 higher, one lower and one unchanged comparisons match each voter's October 18 and October 25 Kentucky placements.

Game results, records and the attributed historical comparison come from Kentucky Athletics' postgame notes, its Vanderbilt recap and its 2026 schedule.
